New Art Club have something unique - a comedy duo who use interpretive dance in their act. Most people would be intrigued by this description, if not put off. But it's no where near as pretentious as it sounds.
Tom Roden and Pete Shenton were young teenagers when the first 'That's What I Call Music' came out in 1983. The prefix 'Now' was added to subsequent compilations - lending to the show's title - 'This Is Now'.
The duo explored the concept of 'now' in a comedic, semi-philisophical way, interspersed with funny, well-choreograhed dance sequences - to the likes of Heaven 17's 'Temptation' and Men Without Hats' 'Safety Dance'.
The pair then went on to discuss nostalgia - inviting ghostly classmate memories of the audience to join them on stage for some 'country dancing' (we all remember those days!).
This Is Now was deeper and more meaningful than I first expected, with more audience participation and thoughtful memories. I left with a warm, entertained feeling from joining the New Art Club, and I hope they return to Bournemouth in future.
The brand new Pavilion Dance centre was the perfect, intimate venue for such a performance, and the facilities are sure to impress any act performing there.
