Your Voice in the Community

In a media filled world it seems as though it’s difficult for individuals or small groups to get their story heard. This is where community radio wins out over other media. Community radio licences are for small-scale, not-for-profit radio stations operated for the good of members of the public, or of particular communities, and in order to deliver social gain.

One such example is Bournemouth’s Hope FM, run out of the town’s YMCA. Kevin Potter the station manager explains: “Hope FM started back in 1993 when a short term license was granted for a Christmas radio project. Then, changes in legislation meant that the station could apply for a 5 year license and we did just that. We are now celebrating 4 years on air broadcasting on 90.1FM and online at hopefm.com.”

Kevin continues: “Thanks to dedicated volunteers we bring a range of broadcasts from new music shows to community interest programmes. It’s amazing what great stories people have to share and we are very privileged to be part of supporting groups and individuals in this way. Hope FM is connected to the local community in so many ways for example we have media students here on work placements, we have worked on projects with the local safer neighbourhoods teams. Community radio is definitely an exciting place to be for our broadcast team and our listeners.”

Check out your local community radio station. You may have something to say that people need to hear about. Across our region other community radio stations include: Bay FM and Forest FM in Dorset and Unity 101, Skyline FM and Angel FM in Hampshire.
