Review: RHCP @ The Lighthouse

September 1, 2011
The Red Hot Chili Peppers debuted their new album I’m With You in a live broadcast around the world this week, including at least one cinema on the South Coast.

Performing live in Cologne, Germany, the band couldn't have chosen a more innovative way to release their tenth album I'm With You. The concert was broadcast to cinemas in 39 countries on the same evening, including the Lighthouse in Poole.

In a way, the gig was a re-birth for the band themselves after a 5-year hiatus. With three members of the band on the cusp of 50 and new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer two decades their junior, it was always going to be a question of how he integrates his sound with the experienced RHCP triumvirate.

The album is nowhere near the Pepper's best, but their energy on stage is a testament of their 26-year longevity. Klinghoffer has a slightly unusual style for a lead guitarist of a funk rock band and Kiedis' new moustache was quite a hit with the German audience. But as in any RHCP gig, the show stopper was Flea: he humours and entertains at the same time but will probably go down as one of the best rock bass guitarists in the world.

Recommended tracks from I'm With You: 'Did I Let You Know', 'Look Around', 'The Adventures of Raindance Maggie', 'Police Station'.

I’m With You is out now.
