Charity of the Month: RockSchool

March 25, 2010
I love movies especially when they are inspired by true stories. Freedom Writers is such a true story, about a class of students who had been ‘written off’ by the educational system, but who found hope and purpose thanks to an extraordinary teacher who saw their potential. I was excited to find that here on the South Coast a similar groundbreaking project has been born.

RockSchool started with the idea that music could be used to mentor young people. A pilot scheme was trialled in London and then in Poole where a 12-week programme developed. The project has now found its home at Rossmore Community College in Poole and The Bishop of Winchester School in Bournemouth, from this base a team now works with nine schools, sparking imagination and creativity.

Gemma Dunning one of the mentoring team explains “It’s amazing to see the change in confidence in just a few weeks. Someone who says that they can’t sing at a first meeting is on stage performing with their friends by week 12. Our passion is to see individuals reach their potential, to dare to dream, to imagine a place where they can.” She continues; “We build on a belief in 40 developmental assets, which represent the relationships, opportunities, and personal qualities that young people need to avoid risks and to thrive.”

Like any project more funding and more volunteers will make an even greater impact. Richard Newland social inclusion manager and leader of RockSchool adds: “We have a talented team and excellent volunteer mentors. Thanks to their skills we are being able to offer a FashionSchool, DanceSchool and a DJSchool as well. The sky’s the limit.”

RockSchool is run by ALOVE UK, the Salvation Army's national youth work office.
